Most packaging-grade formulations use styrene-isoprene-styrene (SIS) or styrene-butadiene-styrene (SBS) block copolymers with tackifying resins and plasticizers.

Hot-melt is the default for general-purpose carton sealing in ambient warehouses, distribution centers, and e-commerce fulfillment — and the dominant adhesive for reinforced kraft paper tape.

The main limitation is temperature: hot-melt softens in heat (developing "edge ooze" in a 50°C truck trailer) and becomes brittle below freezing. For these environments, acrylic is the better choice.

Acrylic: The Long-Term All-Rounder

Chemistry

Acrylic adhesive is a thermosetting polymer that crosslinks after application, forming a permanent chemical bond that strengthens over time. Most kraft paper tape uses water-based acrylic emulsions (solvent-based is largely phased out). The polymer backbone is engineered by adjusting monomers — more butyl acrylate for cold flexibility, more acrylic acid for adhesion to polar surfaces like paper.

Acrylic is the standard for freezer-grade tape, long-term storage, and outdoor or weather-exposed shipments. Water-based acrylics are free from solvents, phthalates, and REACH-listed SVHCs, and are widely used on eco-friendly kraft paper tape.

The trade-off: a slower initial grab (a few seconds of pressure is needed for the bond to develop), and acrylic resists clean removal — useful for tamper evidence, limiting for re-stickable applications.

Rubber-Based: The High-Tack Specialist

Chemistry

Rubber-based adhesives use natural rubber or styrene-butadiene rubber (SBR) dissolved in solvent or water emulsions. They bond on contact with a softer, more aggressive initial tack than hot-melt. Natural rubber delivers peak tack at higher cost; SBR is more consistent and economical.

Best For and Limitations

Rubber is the specialist for low-temperature packaging (chilled and frozen food), rough or recycled-cardboard cartons, and situations requiring aggressive initial grab — for example, heavy cartons where any delay in bonding would cause slippage.

Rubber has the shortest shelf life of the three (typically 1–2 years), the most sensitivity to UV/ozone, and natural rubber formulations carry allergen concerns for some end-users.
