If you have ever tried to compare two "packaging tape" quotes and found them impossible to compare, the problem is the spec sheet. One supplier quotes a 50 μm natural-kraft water-activated tape at 18 N/cm peel; another quotes a 45 μm BOPP acrylic tape at 6 N/cm. Both seal cartons. They are not the same product, and they do not have the same cost-per-carton-sealed. Here is how to read every line on a credible tape spec sheet.
1. Substrate: The Material the Backing Is Made Of
The substrate determines recyclability, print compatibility, look, and most of the regulatory profile:
- Kraft paper (natural or white). Recyclable in the paper stream, REACH/RoHS-friendly, the substrate of choice for EU PPWR alignment.
- BOPP film. Biaxially-oriented polypropylene — the clear or tan shiny tape on most e-commerce boxes. Strong and low-cost, but a plastic that complicates paper-stream recycling.
- PVC film. Heavily restricted under EU RoHS and the SVHC list — uncommon in serious import programs today.
- Filament tape. Fiberglass-reinforced, used for pallet banding rather than carton sealing.
For EU, Japan, and Korea-bound shipments, kraft paper tape is increasingly the substrate of choice. The substrate line on your spec sheet should also include grammage (gsm) — typical kraft tape runs 90–120 gsm; lighter weights are cheaper but tear easier during application.
2. Adhesive Type and Coat Weight
The adhesive is the performance half of any tape. Three chemistries a serious spec will name:
- Starch-based (water-activated). Penetrates carton fibers and creates a fiber-tearing bond. The strongest carton seal per gram of adhesive, and the only one that creates a tamper-evident seal. Requires a water-activated tape dispenser.
- Hot-melt rubber. High initial tack, best for cold-storage and dusty environments, lower temperature ceiling.
- Acrylic (water-based). UV-resistant, low-odor, REACH/RoHS-clean, medium initial tack with high ultimate adhesion. The standard for export-grade kraft paper tape.
The spec sheet should also list coat weight — grams of adhesive per square meter. Never accept a quote that omits the number.
3. Total Thickness (μm or mil)
Total thickness combines substrate + adhesive and drives both dispenser feel and perceived quality on the carton. Spec sheets that list only total thickness without breaking out substrate and adhesive are hiding something — usually a heavy substrate with a thin adhesive coat.
- Economy BOPP carton-sealing tape: 40–45 μm
- Standard BOPP: 45–55 μm
- Standard kraft water-activated tape: 110–140 μm
- Heavy-duty kraft: 140–170 μm
4. Tensile Strength (N/cm or lbs/in)
The force required to break the tape along its length. It matters most for heavy cartons, automated sealing lines, and long-haul shipments where the seal absorbs shock:
- Light cartons (< 5 kg): 20–30 N/cm is plenty.
- Standard export cartons (5–25 kg): 35–50 N/cm.
- Heavy / palletized loads: 60 N/cm and above.
Be cautious of suppliers quoting tensile numbers without a test method (ASTM D3759, ISO 29864, GB/T).
5. Peel Adhesion (N/cm or oz/in)
The force required to peel the tape off a standard steel plate at 180° — the headline "stickiness" number. For most export cartons, 5–8 N/cm is the working range; 10+ N/cm signals an aggressive adhesive for recycled or rough cartons. Always carry a method (ASTM D3330, FINAT FTM 1, GB/T) — a common trick is quoting "up to" numbers from one optimal-condition test.
6. Holding Power (Shear Adhesion, Minutes)
How long a tape strip, under a fixed weight on a vertical surface, takes to fail. It measures sustained-stress adhesion — critical for parcels stacked in warehouses or shipped through tropical climates. Standard: ASTM D3654 or FINAT FTM 8, 1 kg load on a 25 × 25 mm bond, 23 °C, 50% RH. Acceptable for export-grade tape: 60+ minutes; 240+ is premium. Suppliers that quote tensile and peel but skip holding power often catch the failure only in the container at destination.
7. Width, Length, and Core
Roll geometry drives line economics. Common specs for carton-sealing kraft tape: width 48 mm, 60 mm, 72 mm, or 100 mm matched to your dispenser; length per roll 50–500 m (longer rolls lower cost-per-meter but need stronger cores to avoid collapse); core ID 76 mm (3") global standard, with 38 mm / 50 mm cores for some automated lines. A case sealer spec should also include splice tolerance and unwind tension — both ignored by casual quotes.
8. Temperature and Storage Specs
Every credible spec sheet names an application temperature range and a service temperature range:
- Acrylic kraft tape: application -5 to +40 °C; service -20 to +80 °C.
- Hot-melt rubber: application +10 to +30 °C; service -10 to +60 °C.
- Water-activated kraft: cannot be applied below freezing without a heated water pot.
Skip this line and you discover the failure mode only in the container. Pressure-sensitive tape shelf life is typically 12 months at 15–25 °C, 40–60% RH; water-activated kraft runs 18–24 months.
9. Compliance Paperwork — The Line Importers Actually Need
The most important "specification" of an imported tape is the paperwork that comes with it. For an EU shipment, the minimum credible set is:
- REACH test report against the current SVHC list (253 substances, January 2026) — accredited lab, dated within 12 months, covering the finished tape.
- RoHS test report covering the 10 restricted substances.
- MSDS for the finished tape.
- Declaration of Conformity if your customer requires one for tenders.
- Recyclability statement noting which paper stream the tape fits into under PPWR.
Add FDA 21 CFR, EU 1935/2004, or EN 71-3 for food-contact, medical, or toy applications. The paperwork decides whether your container clears customs in 5 days or 5 weeks.
